In the world of Human Resources, aligning with the company’s mission is often discussed, but have we considered creating a tailored HR Vision Statement for our teams?
The Power of a Tailored Vision
When I assumed the role of Group HR Director at my last company, the HR department was the underperforming unit of the organisation. My ambition was far greater than just turning the tide; I aspired to make our HR team the gold standard within the companyโa department that others would want to join.
Giving the team a clear sense of direction was crucial to achieve this lofty goal. After considerable reflection, I formulated an HR Vision Statement that served as our North Star: “We aim to be a friendly, approachable HR team that knows, understands, and supports the business and its objectives.” This wasn’t just a catchy phrase; it became the cornerstone of our ethos, guiding us in every decision and interaction.
By the time I moved on, the HR department had undergone a remarkable transformation. We were no longer the company’s Achilles’ heel but a paragon of efficiency and support. While the turnaround wasn’t solely due to our vision statement, it was indispensable in clarifying our path and galvanising the team.
Why an HR Vision Statement Is Essential
Alignment with Business Goals: A well-crafted vision ensures your HR team is a strategic partner, not just a support function.
Team Cohesion: A shared vision fosters unity and provides a sense of purpose.
We held a team meeting to discuss the Vision Statement. Everyone shared their excitement about the future and contributed fantastic ideas on how to achieve it.
Accountability: It sets a standard of excellence, making it easier to measure performance and outcomes.
Leading in the Direction of Your HR Vision Statement
Communicate Clearly: Make sure every team member understands the vision and their role in it.
As part of our efforts to align everyone with our vision, my HR Shared Services Manager created a picture with the Vision Statement overlaid for each team member to hang in their office. In addition, my HRIS expert assisted everyone in adding the same image to their email signature line, making it easier for everyone in the company to know about our direction.
Walk the Talk: Actions speak louder than words. Make sure your leadership reflects the vision you’ve set.
Regular Check-ins: Periodically assess alignment with your vision and adjust as needed.
Beyond the Company’s Vision
While aligning with the company’s broader goals is crucial, having an HR Vision Statement allows for a more nuanced approach to problem-solving and decision-making.
In my interactions with other department heads, I explained my vision for the HR team and encouraged them to draw up similar statements.
